2015 WSOA Student Council elected

The new Student Council has been elected to represent WSOA students for 2015.  Led by Chairperson Lehlohonolo Mmeti, with Vice Chairperson Fumani Mabogoane, and Secretary General Gontse Mathabathe, the council has already initiated a survey of student resource centre usage and is busy organising a student music concert against xenophobia.  We look forward to activist leadership from the new student council at a time when issues of transformation are at the top of the university...


A CALL FOR PROPOSALS: DRAMA FOR LIFE South African Theatre Season at the State Theatre Drama for Life will be presenting a season of solo works at the State Theatre in June. The season, under the curatorship of Drama for Life, is a window into new South African works that explore notions of identity through memory, story, movement and gesture, and ritual. Drama for Life is calling for proposals for one new or re-worked solo production to be selected to be part of the season. The call is open to all artists. Fak’ugesi Digital Africa Conference and Journal Publication

We are pleased to announce that a selection of papers from the Fak’ugesi Digital Africa Conference is now available as a Special Issue of the Technoetic Arts: A Journal of Speculative Research. First VJ Workshop at Wits Digital Arts

Michele Dykes, a Wits Digital Arts Animation MA alumni, returned to Digital Arts this March to run a two-day VJ workshop on Friday 6th – Saturday 7th for students and anyone else interested in exploring this growing field of practice and experimentation. Michele has been developing a reputation as a VJ and projection-mapping artist in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Under the name VJ Fantasmagoria, Michele has been performing at live music events, dance clubs, parties and product launches.  She has also participated in several international festivals of live visualisation. Students on the workshop were taught basic content creation techniques, including animation and live-action for VJing. They were also introduced to the interface and features of the popular VJing software, Resolume Arena K. The electronic music festival takes place at Wits, 9-13 September.
Since the first festival in Johannesburg, 2005, Unyazi festivals have provided a platform for South Africa’s flourishing community of electronic composers and an interface with some of the most highly regarded international artists currently working in the field.

Last week, Matthew Hahn visited the Division of Drama, and interacted with students in Performance Studies 4, Arts Management and in Open Forum He spoke about studying abroad, specifically the St. Mary’s Study Aboard programme as well as more generally about other opportunities in London.
