Johanna Mavhungu is a researcher and lecturer in creative industries, with a particular focus on film and television.  Her work draws from her experience as an entrepreneur, independent cultural worker and the nine years she worked as a researcher and lecturer at the Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership (SPI) at Rhodes University. Her research looks at management practices and trends at community and mainstream media organisations as well as start-up and independent arts organisations operating in urban and peri-urban areas in South Africa. The research output from her activities is used by media practitioners and students reading for courses in Media, Arts and Culture Management. Johanna completed her studies including her Masters of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. At the SPI she worked and collaborated on research projects with the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), the Open Society Foundation for South Africa (OSF-SA), the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) and the South African Department of Communications. At Wits, she is developing new partnerships, mentoring students and working on projects that embody the work she teaches in her courses.
