Carly Whitaker, an alumni of the Wits Digital Interactive Media MA programme, recently had two digital works featured in an important group show at the Everard Read Gallery in Cape Town.
Entitled “Empire” the group exhibition explored the “loaded historical and contemporary references of this heavily imprinted word”. The exhibition attempted to bring together both historical examples of artworks that address the subject of empire as well as showcasing new voices in contemporary South African visual arts such as Carly.
Carly’s first piece was an interactive LED sculpture called “Carbon City – day 3 – Phase 3” , a work which has been a on-going production and has been evolving since June last year.
The second was an animated GIF which has been included in the email invitation to the exhibition. This GIF is part of an ongoing online artwork called “#EMPIRE#EXHIBITION” featured on New Hive. Carly has been uploading different gifs which discuss and explore this notion on empire in a digital context.
