BA HONOURS in DIGITAL ARTS

Animation – Interactive Media – Game Design

The Honours in Digital Arts caters for candidates interested in enhancing their research and creative practice with a specialization in Animation, Interactive Media or Game Design.  In the Animation and Interactive Media specialisations, you will learn key production skills, combined with an academic addition that will enhance your writing and research skills.  In the Game Design specialisation, you will have the opportunity to work under supervision on a sustained creative piece of your own choice and reflect on your practical production in a research-based long essay.

This is a one-year full-time (or two years part-time) programme and is ideally suited for students with a three-year degree who wish to prepare for entry into a Masters programme in Digital Arts or for those who simply wish to add a year of Digital Arts expertise to their existing degree. This course has a minimum requirement of a 3 year Bachelours Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF level 7). The Honours program additionally acts as a bridge to the Masters Degrees in Interactive Media, Animation or Game Design.

MASTERS in DIGITAL ARTS

3D Animation – Masters by Coursework

This 12-month program designed to develop strong practical skills, paired with components in practice theory and research.

The focus for Animation is the art of 3D animation. You will learn to see, think and understand the possibility of animation as well advance your 3D technical abilities. Emphasis is on storytelling, character design, and production management skills.

Interactive Media and Creative Technology

The focus for Interactive Digital Media is on innovative and creative practice with interactive technology. You will learn development for screen-based media as well as live interactive environments. Emphasis is on technical skills development, using interactivity as a strategic and creative tool.

This area allows you to focus on a range of topics, and have the option to link your research to your own creative practice.  This is aimed at candidates who wish to engage with the creative possibilities offered by games and interactive stories.

MASTERS BY DISSERTATION

Interactive Media and Creative Technology – Animation – Game Design – Interactive Narrative

A research degree designed to give you space and supervision to develop a substantial research or creative project. The Masters by Dissertation is recommended for candidates with a strong research or creative interest, but who have a research and writing experience.
A vast range of research areas are available, and candidates are encouraged to approach potential supervisors to discuss potential topics.

Interactive Media and Creative Technology Research

Research topics for Interactive Media will be accepted from a range of topics that include interactivity and creativity, interactivity and development, digital innovation, social media, mobile media, user-focused design and investigations for African and South African digital media development and theory.

Animation Research

Research topics for Animation will be accepted from a range of topics that include animation history, theory, practice and production systems, or animation education and various forms of motion studies.

Game Design and Interactive Narrative Research

Research topics for Game Design will be accepted from a range of topics from game studies, games in culture, games in education, to interactive writing theory and practice.
